You always want what’s best for your children, and it’s no different when it comes to their teeth. When your child’s facial bone structure or teeth show early signs of problems, you might be worried that there isn’t much that can be done to correct their symptoms and treat potential developmental problems, but Donaldson 3D Orthodontics has a solution: dentofacial orthopedics!
What Is Dentofacial Orthopedics?
Orthodontic care involves the correction of tooth growth and positioning, and dentofacial orthopedics is the guiding of the bones of the jaw and face to encourage the same results. Using a series of devices and techniques to hold and move your child’s bone, we can make sure that their future growth gives them a great smile!
Dr. Buddy is able to use his unique specialty training in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics to provide expert care to your children, so you know your family is in good hands. In fact, Dr. Buddy is the only dual-trained specialist in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, board-certified in Orthodontics in Louisiana.
It’s best to start a dentofacial treatment cycle at about age seven or eight, and treatment usually takes about 14 months.
Devices We Use
Dentofacial orthopedics is generally a two-stage process with jaw and tooth movement involved. In many cases we’ll be working on your child’s bone structure at the same time that they’re wearing braces, depending on when they start treatment.
Temporary Anchorage Device
Commonly called TADs, these devices are similar to a small dental implant. They are used, with standard braces or orthodontics, to reposition teeth faster than typical orthodontics would allow. TADs are often used to treat overbites, underbites, or other “jutting” conditions.
In the past, patients needing treatment with TADs would be stuck wearing headgear, but with these amazing devices, those days are over! We have used TADs to save our patients thousands of dollars in expensive oral surgeries by eliminating the need for cutting and reshaping of bone!
Propel Orthodontic Device
When it comes to moving the bones of the jaw to realign teeth and perfect your child’s smile, the challenge is always how to do it more efficiently and with less complicated procedures. The Propel device is one way in which we speed up the process!
Using a small device that is placed under the gums, the Propel device safely stimulates bone growth and remodeling to help your child’s teeth move easier and faster. Propel can shorten treatment times, meaning less time with braces or other orthodontic treatment for your children!
Dentofacial orthopedics is a great solution for children with abnormal bites or bone structures.
