Caring for Your Smile for Years to Come

Once your orthodontic treatment is nearly complete, it’s time to think about keeping your teeth right where you want them. The best way to do that is through the use of a retainer that you wear nightly and sometimes during the day, as directed by Dr. Buddy. Your teeth will continue to move for the rest of your life, and without wearing a retainer, you’ll quickly find yourself without the smile you spent months working to achieve!

The Importance of Retainers

Retainers are made of metal wires bonded to a plastic piece that sits on the roof of your mouth or behind your bottom row of teeth. We craft your retainer from an impression of your teeth at the end of treatment and make any necessary adjustments once we get it back from our dental lab.

Getting into the habit of wearing your retainer is fundamental to keeping your new smile in that perfect place. When your braces initially come off, your bone will continue to stabilize over several months, meaning that the immediate post-treatment period is when your new smile is at its most vulnerable!

By wearing a retainer properly, your teeth will have a chance to settle and become much more stable. But that isn’t the end of your retainer use – your teeth will continue to shift for the rest of your life! In order to ensure that your perfect smile lasts a lifetime, we encourage you to always wear your retainer just as prescribed by Dr. Buddy!

Caring for Your Retainer

  • Retainers can end up with plaque built up on them – be sure to rinse your retainer nightly and periodically clean it with regular denture cleaning solution.
  • Make sure you store your retainer in the case we provide. Without using your case, you can risk damaging or losing your retainer, or even worse – having to fight your dog for it!
  • Retainers are made from a plastic that is sensitive to high temperatures. Don’t leave it in a car during the summer or boil it as a cleaning measure – you can warp or ruin your retainer! 115 degrees Fahrenheit is the point at which serious damage will occur.
  • Never place your retainer in your pocket – that’s a surefire way to forget you have it and inadvertently break it!

Your first retainer is included as part of the cost of your orthodontic treatment. Replacement, repair, or servicing your retainer will be charged separately, so be sure you take good care of it – it’s one simple tool that will help your great results last a lifetime!

Other Ways to Protect Your New Smile

We strongly encourage you to see your dentist every six months for a cleaning and exam. This will help ensure your continued oral health, which will in turn help your teeth stay healthy for life. After investing so much time and money in your orthodontic treatment, you don’t want to have it ruined by gum disease, decay, or other smile-destroying problems!
