When you think of orthodontic treatment what do you think of? Probably braces, Invisalign, and any other number of orthodontic techniques to straighten teeth. The similarity between all of those treatments is that they are reacting to teeth that have already grown in crooked. It surprises a lot of patients to know that orthodontics can prevent problems from ever occurring too!
At Donaldson 3D Orthodontics we’re thrilled to have the skill, experience, and special devices needed to treat your child’s orthodontic problems before they ever become something that you have to repair! A proactive approach to your child’s teeth can save time, money, and embarrassment for them later in life!
Why Choose Preventive Orthodontics?
Did you grow up with bad teeth? How about your child’s other parent? If you answered yes to one or both of those questions there’s a good chance that your child is going to have crooked, crowded, or bad teeth too!
Were you self-conscious of your bad teeth as a child? Maybe you wore braces or other orthodontic equipment that made you the butt of jokes. No parent wants that for their child and with preventive orthodontics you can ensure they grow into a smile that’s straight, healthy, and beautiful! If you’ve ever thought that your goal was to create a better life for your children then you’d probably jump at the chance to spare them the discomfort of traditional braces!
It’s also a benefit for you, the parent, as well. Preventive orthodontic care takes time but it is much cheaper than going the traditional route! Our techniques don’t correct an erupted tooth bit by bit over the course of two years – we make changes to your child’s tooth development early on!
What Kinds Of Treatments Are Involved?
If you’re concerned that your child may need preventive orthodontic treatment we recommend bringing them in by age 7. At that point they’ll be starting to have adult tooth development that we can see and model based on 3D scans, X-rays, and visual observation of their baby teeth.
Depending on what your child needs there are a variety of devices and techniques we can apply:
- When your child loses a tooth, prematurely or otherwise, space maintainers help us keep the gap open until the adult tooth begins to come in. These devices are also great at creating a large enough opening to allow a future tooth to come in without crowding!
- An underbite or overbite can be corrected by using a spring-based device called a forsus. This device uses tension to push and pull against the jaw and move the teeth into perfect alignment. These devices are ideal for young patients because they take advantage of the flexibility of their bone structure, allowing it to move faster and efficiently as they continue to grow.
- Expanders increase the size of a dental arch to reduce crowding, eliminate underbites and overbites, and create a perfect pathway for adult teeth. These devices are attached to the jaw and slowly increased in size over time.
Those are just a few of the devices we use to correct your child’s teeth before things become severe. With any luck your young ones won’t even need braces once they reach adulthood! While many young patients still need some corrective work to straighten teeth that might still come in crooked the duration of treatment is greatly reduced with preventive orthodontics!
Polishing Up A Smile
For patients still needing correction after preventive orthodontics we often recommend Invisalign teen! This great modification of traditional Invisalign treatment is meant just for teenagers who might avoid wearing their alignment trays or lose them!
Invisalign teen trays come with a color strip that wears over time so that you know if they’re actually wearing them! The treatment sequence also comes with extra aligners in case your teen “misplaces” their alignment trays. They might not like Invisalign during treatment but they’ll love the results!
